OK so I didn’t expect my first appearance on TV as a vet to be a national one. International, even, if you consider the broad audience of mixed nationality US Hispanics.
Nope. I expected something sleepy and local where I wouldn’t be up against all that cleavage! (If you’ve ever watched Univision or Telemundo you’ll know what I’m talking about.)
Tomorrow on 7:30 AM EST on Telemundo you too can watch me live on national television—in Spanish!
Strangely enough, I’ll be talking about well bird care. Those of you who know me might be scratching your heads right about now (since when does Dr. Khuly ever write about birds?) but, hey, a girl’s got to catch a break wherever she can and this Tuesday’s topic is as good as any.
I’ll confess to being a tad nervous about this. No, it’s not the TV thing. And the national bit doesn’t really freak me out either—nor does the bird topic for that matter. My issue is the language.
Like most Cuban-Americans of my age living in Miami my Spanish is not the kind of fluent by-the-book Spanish you might learn in a college classroom or by living in Spain, for example. It’s got quirks. Luckily I’ve spent significant time in Mexico and Spain in both academic and professional capacities—though it’s been a while.
That’s why today I’ll be brushing up on my Spanish—for veterinarians. I bought this great book every vet and vet tech should purchase if they interact at all with Spanish speaking pet owners. Aside from learning the proper terms for dehorning goats and castrating pigs it’s got all kinds of fun small animal medicine words I’d never heard of!
Sure, tomorrow morning I’ll be nervous, quaking in my heels, even. But you’ll never know it—not under the obligatory half inch of makeup I’ll likely be wearing. Wish me luck!

Good luck!! I am sure you'll do wonderfully.
I wouldn't worry too much about the Spanish - every language has it's regional variations, that's what keeps it all interesting. :)
Now I am going to have to see if I get Telemundo here, and setup the Tivo!

Good luck! What prompted an interview about birds?

Patty - My experience with Spanish has always been that Latinos (and Latino audiences) are much more grateful that you addressed them in their language than that you got everything absolutely perfect. I guess you could say the same for someone trying to speak English.
I'll be Tivoing your performance for posterity's sake.

Good Luck!!!!

I will be TiVoing it, too. You'll be GREAT!!!

Aye Poppy! You'll be like the only natural blond in the building! You'll also have to practice your Salsa, since whenever I flick that channel on, someone is doing the Salsa. And are you going to adopt that deep smoker's tranny voice? Half the women hosts have the man-voice. Gosh, I love telemundo.
Christopher March 31st, 2008 12:48:00 PM
What do you mean by "adopt"? I guess it's time to get my podcasts out so you can hear "the voice." (OK, so it's really not that deep but it's not a soprano, either).

Hi Dr. Khuly,
Congrats and good luck on the T.V. appearance!
If you currently process credit cards in your practice, you are probably already aware of the Visa/MasterCard rate increase. Rates should only increase by 5-10 basis points (0.05%-0.10%). If you see an increase of anything more than that, contact your merchant service provider and negotiate a better rate.
Thanks,
Diane

Good luck Dr. K. ! If I can figure out which of my Spanish language channels is Telemundo I'll Tivo it! (my Spanish is horrrible...)
Looks like the TV career is just in time. If Diane is right about those credit card rates I don't how you could make any money being a vet anymore. ;-)

I won't wish you luck. You'll do just fine. You've got something important to share with people and your passion for that will shine through no matter what. Have fun!!!

OK a vote--should I delete Diane? Larry, your comment makes it unwise to do so since it's soooo apropos. But the next time? I say yes but your ratification would seal it.
By the way--I did just fine. I didn't stumble too much and my voice shook only once or twice. Now it looks like I'll have a steady Tuesday gig. They want me back next week, too!

Congrats on being invited back next week! Telemuuuunnnnndddoo!
re: Diane: Yeah, I say delete those types of posts. It's kind of amusing to make fun of them, but I'm afraid if you leave them in it will attract more.

Sad day, I thought Diane picked out my blog specifically to spam... *tear*
Actually she is making the vet rounds, having spammed the Student Doctor boards a few days ago too. Did she hear somewhere that vets/vet students are gullible?

Megan: Wouldn't be too far off the mark. Wanna free puppy?

¡Felicidades atrasadas, nena! I'm sure you were great, and I'm sorry I missed it. Will catch next week for sure.
