Vet School 101 How to get your cat to eat vegetables...and lose weight

Four BIG paws up for the SlimCat ball!!  :O)  Although we've had to relegate it to the basement - the dogs have eaten through a few of them, and the basement access is the only one exclusive to kitties (due to litter temptations...)

Huge props also to Dr. K for not ONCE mentioning veterinary reducing diets packed with empty carbs.  ;O)  One day we SHALL convert the entire veterinary profession!

I would like to add my favourite fat cat tip - we feed fat kitties on baking sheets.  People look at me funny when I suggest it, but it prevents the big gulping mouthfuls and forces felines to eat one kibble at a time.  This in turn makes them feel more full, and it also prevents much of the vomiting associated with kibble gulping.  Not quite so effective with dogs - I find they end up eating more air this way.  For dogs, the BrakeFast bowl has so far tested best in our house, and has worked with both kibble and raw food.

We had some success with grain-free canned food. Unfortunately, it gets pretty expensive.

Crystal May 30th, 2009 11:59:43 AM

Kibble is not good for cats.  Any kibble.  It's too low on water for an animal with a low thirst drive, which cats are.  Most store bought kibble is a meat flavored cereal.  The so-called good quality kibble are very high on fat and can add to the weight problem and create other health issues.  Before I switched to raw, I fed Orijen, a suposedly good quality kibble.  It may well be true that the ingredients and the preservatives in high quality kibble are better than in the cheap brands, but they are still not optimal nutrition.  One of my cats got in trouble with his bladder while on the Orijen kibble.  In addition, fats in any kibble become rancid over time at room temperature.  If a product has any meat in it and can "keep" at room temperature for over a year, just imagine what preservatives have to go into it.  If you can't feed raw to your cats, high quality canned foods are better than kibble.  Cats don't need vegetables, and those with IBD and sensitive stomachs shouldn't have any.

Natalie Kramer May 30th, 2009 01:05:38 PM

Natalie: It is possible to "make" your own kibble by dehydrating canned food or fresh meats. And cats offered water as a play-toy will more than make up for the lack of it in their food. I recommend the fountain-type waterers or--less Earth-friendly--a drippy sink.

Then there's the open question of why cats who are fed wet food exclusively are more predisposed to hyperthyroidism.

The whole kibble vs. wet thing has failed to convince me--one either side.

As to cats getting veggies--sure, they don't need them, but neither do they need all those empty calories from treats--or any treats at all. I'd so much rather see a cat pouncing after a frozen corn niblet than getting a "Pounce"-brand treat. It's all about moderation, anyway--and getting fun stimulation with some exercise thrown in.

Dr. Patty Khuly May 30th, 2009 01:13:35 PM

So what do YOU do to keep your cats slim?

Regular daily play and exercise.

Evet May 30th, 2009 02:47:50 PM

I also try to keep in mind that "man is the only animal who eats when they are not hungry, drinks when they are not thirsty".

Evet May 30th, 2009 03:42:10 PM

High carb no grain diets seem to work best, preferably canned - both with my own, and with friends' and clients' cats who are challenged by a little extra weight.  If you must feed dry, I'd go with a grain-free diet such as Innove EVO or the new Wellness CORE.

As for the SlimCat feeding ball - my VERY food motivated cat retrieved three of the two Greenies treats I put in there (don't yell at me - they're 2 calories a piece, and she gets three a day at the most!), then she sat in front of the ball and stared at me.  She never fell for the ball ploy again - I think it's simply beneath her :-)

Ingrid King May 30th, 2009 04:03:26 PM

I seriously had to laugh at #3 throwing the kibble across the floor. LOL  I have one cat that likes to wander into everyone's bowl but his own.  He's not as energetic as his slimmer sisters so to get him more excersize and to keep him out of the other cats bowls I do toss kibble across the floor for him.  He sometimes does a pretty good job of catching it mid air too.

As for my other cats, just measuring food out, eliminating ALL treats, set feeding times (2-3 times a day), and getting them to play as much as possible seems to do the trick.  At most my heaviest cats are only 1-1 1/2 lbs overweight, the rest are at or below the vet's prefered weight for them.

Now my mom is a different story.  Her cat is a tubby and headed for diabetes.  Although mom swears the cat only eats 1/4 cup of kibble a day, the cat is very inactive, and mom gives her treats in addition to a nip of people food occasionally. She thinks my cats look 'too thin' and she thinks hers looks fine.  *sigh*

cl May 30th, 2009 04:03:49 PM

1. Go grain free. This is probably the top recommendation I can make. Feed a species appropriate diet. This probably means ditching the kibble and switching to a higher quality wet.

There are grain-free kibbles out there, but you have to be very careful with these - look at the calorie count on them. Evo grain-free kibble is extremely calorie dense. You don't want to have to feed your cat two or three times their daily calorie needs just to get them feeling full.

I'm a big proponent of raw feeding, and while I realize this isn't for everyone, it's not nearly as difficult, expensive, dangerous or complicated as many people make it out to be. (It's actually much cheaper than feeding commercial food in my experience - even the crappy supermarket brands.)

2. Get them active. Even if your cat is huge and nearly immobile that doesn't mean they can't play. If they can't run, get them rolling and batting at toys while they lay on their back.

You can work your way up from a little bit of activity to more and more as they lose weight. Yes, if your cat is inactive this will require that you sit and play with them, but I think we can all spare 15 minutes out of our day. Your cat's health depends on it, so make the time.

3. No more free-feeding. If your cat can't self-regulate then you have to do it for them. Free-feeding is convenient, but a fat cat will do much better with restricted food and meal times. You may have to feed 4-5 times a day at the start, to get them used to it, and you can work your way down to twice a day.

4. Measure portions. Every... single... time. It is very, very easy to over feed.

The right amount of food for your cat probably looks ridiculously insufficient. My three cats each need less than 3oz of food per day to maintain their ideal weight. This looks like nothing (about three 1in cubes of meat), and if I don't weight out portions I end up feeding a little more and then a little more and so forth, and eventually they're getting 50% more per day than they need (or more and it still looks like it's not enough.) This results in tubby cats.

If you don't know how much to feed, consult your vet - the feeding guidelines on commercial food are generally useless.

5. Feed separately or supervise. If you have multiple cats it's important to make sure that you don't have one cat stealing food from another. Feed in separate areas of the room, in different rooms or in crates if need be. Or, supervise while they eat and physically stop your food-theives from taking your other cats' meals.

I have one very fast eater, Clover, and one very slow eater, Cajun. If I don't keep an eye on things, Clover will gulp down her food and then go take away Cajun's food (doubly bad because Cajun has a hard time putting on and maintaining enough weight.) Clover would quickly become a little fatty if I let her.

6. Limit treats. Use them to reward good behaviour or for training but otherwise be sparing with them. If you're using commercial treats (probably not the best choice - most are heavy on the grain) cut each treat into two or three pieces. Commercial treats are way bigger than they need to be and your cat will be just as happy to get 1/3 of a treat (and 1/3 of the calories) as they would be to get a whole one.

7. Feed stimulating food. If food is convenient and boring it's easy to over eat. Food that requires a bit of effort or that encourages activity is going to engage your cat, reduce boredom and get them moving.

Large chunks of meat that have to be manouvered and chewed to be eaten; meat chunks with soft, edible bone in them; a pre-killed mouse or live crickets are all really great ways to get your cat active and engaged with their food.

I don't buy feeder mice too often because of the cost, but on the occassions I do, I can usually expect at least an hour of high energy playing with the (dead) mouse before it gets eaten. Putting the cat in an empty bath tub with a live cricket is also a great way to get them engaged (though crickets probably won't make a full meal.)

8. Provide cat grass. It wont help them lose weight on its own, but if your cat loves to eat and chew on stuff it can help sate that urge.

9. Monitor weight on a regular basis. If you have a scale that's great, but at the very least, regularly feel around the ribs and along the back and look at their shape. It's a lot easier to maintain a healthy weight than it is to lose weight and if you don't stay on top of it, it's easy to not notice them putting on weight until they're officially over weight.

---

Soon I'll be helping my mother diet her two obese cats. She's had great difficulty getting their weight down, but I'm actually looking forward to the project. I anticipate it being a slow process (as it should be) but I don't believe it will be impossible or all that challenging. I've established a good level of personal dicipline with managing my own cats, so once we get over the hump of getting them adapted to the new routine, I'm hoping it will be smooth sailing.

Anlina Sheng - abnormalloveofcats.com May 30th, 2009 10:03:31 PM

Kibble is not good for cats.

I know one cat who lived for 19 year on kibble, never had to go to the Vet ONCE during her entire life.  Renal failure was what brought the end so how do we know if this was a diet induced illness or just old age?

Evet May 31st, 2009 10:57:03 AM

"a drippy sink"  One of my cats has a preference for this over fountains but only in my condo where we have metal water pipes.  I keep wondering if the increased level of mineral deposits from the metal pipes is the reason for the preference.

I'm hoping my two fatties will like having an enclosed porch at the new house; hoping they'll get more exercise and fresh air.  We'll see.

PJBoosinger May 31st, 2009 11:02:33 AM

Evet, I disagree to some degree with people being the only species to eat when not hungry. Bored animals will sometimes eat for lack of anything else to do. Some pets lack stimulation in their day to day lives.  http://k-9solutionsdogtraininginc.blogspot.com

Marie May 31st, 2009 11:35:45 AM

Some dogs will for sure eat when they aren't hungry, as anyone who's ever met the average Lab can attest.

Anecdotes are not data, but I just lost my 23 year old cat.  She was kibble fed the majority of her life.  It's hard to imagine that raw feeding could have increased her life-span or made her healthier.  She, too, had a total of one sick visit to the vet in her lifetime.  All the rest were regular well check-ups.

Shelly May 31st, 2009 03:23:18 PM

"If a product has any meat in it and can "keep" at room temperature for over a year, just imagine what preservatives have to go into it."

I thought dried meat can keep for a long time in general? Without moisture, stuff like jerky can keep for ages. Kibble is all dried stuff, it doesn't need crazy amounts of preservatives not to go bad. Only if it gets damp will there be a problem.

Pai May 31st, 2009 03:33:38 PM

Evet, Your quote "man is the only animal who eats when they are not hungry, drinks when they are not thirsty" appears to be from Montesquieu but it's certainly counter intuitive.  All animals have a drive to eat when food is available and many (man and otherwise) have utmost difficulty overcoming the drive.  There's clear evidence now that some are more genetically pre-disposed to that survival drive than others but lacking it altogether would be hazardous to any species.

PJBoosinger May 31st, 2009 05:10:08 PM

Ah, yes, the over-eating thing as attributed to man alone....

Make no mistake: The horse, goat and dog are also capable of killing themselves with food. In the case of all three, far more speedily than man.

Dr. Patty Khuly May 31st, 2009 06:59:03 PM

I know for sure unheeded my dogs would at least eat themselves sick if not to death and I've seen horses do it also.

my cats like frozen peas and frozen corn...fun to play with, good to eat. I also hide little food tidbits around for them for "forage" as well

but they love to play with pingpong balls and straws. We just collect them into a basket and leave them accessible and they are scattered all over by the end of the day, ready to be collected and played with again.

but I do have a cubby cat or two...no matter what we do, they are couch potatoes.

I would like to update about my co-worker's elderly cat. I believe it was Connie (thank you!) that offered help with #1 & #2---diabetes.

Well on some great advice, she has switched from SD prescription food to Fancy Feast (only certain flavors) and her cat has gone from literally "death's door" to active, nicer coat, & good appetite , less H2O consumption.

Diet is more important than medicine/drugs!

I have no clue what I would do feeding a feline. Believe it or not, mine lived a long, healthy life on Science Diet kibble--at the time, a premium food and supplemented by their own "fresh kill".

No special measures are needed to keep this cat slim.  Tonkinese genetics that gave her a small frame?   She has STAIRS available 24x7 and two cat trees.  EVO 95% Chicken and Turkey plus limited ingredient kibbles, because she has food allergies.  (All the cheap stuff has forbidden ingredients.)

Miss Kitty's Mom June 1st, 2009 01:00:17 AM

Barbara,

I assume that by SD prescription food you mean Science Diet food, no literally the Hills S/D food. If so, the S/D is a very specific food to control crystal production in cats. Fancy Feast, which will make a cat eat more, does NOT control this.  It is meant to be a short term diet for about 6 weeks and then switch to a maintence urinary diet.

I believe that diet is cornerstone to any good healthy animal. Now that the cat is on the mend, try to get it onto something healthier than fancy feast.

Kathy June 1st, 2009 02:36:20 PM

My boys eat measured quantities of Orijen 6 Fish kibble & canned EVO Chicken/Turkey.  It's kibble for breakfast, then a mixed bowl of wet & kibble for dinner.  They must eat in separate rooms, due to one being a food-crazed scarfer bandit.  I will also take kibble from their daily allotment to hide around the house for them to find, or throw on the floor like chicken feed.  I've taught them to Sit with the oh-so-stinky Butler Lean Treats.  They usually get two of these before I leave for work.  I will sometimes put one or two inside a toy for the food-crazy kitty.  He works like a mad man to get them.

I made the mistake of free feeding my previous baby, and he ballooned to 18 lbs, developed diabetes, etc.  With controlled feeding he lost 4 lbs, but he still only lived to a month shy of his 15th birthday.  I wish I could do it all over with him, knowing what I know now.

Stephanie June 1st, 2009 05:33:10 PM

I'm glad I checked back so I can clarify my post. My co-worker's cat was on Hill's prescription food (and I don't remember which one) bought directly from her clinic. It was upon advice of someone experienced w/ diabetes in felines to try Fancy Feast (only a couple of specific flavors). This has turned around the cat from an unthrifty appearance , weak rear, increased urination--to a cat energetic enough to climb stairs, no longer hiding, coat improvement, etc. (according to her description) and is still on some tablet meds (no inj. insulin).

Now my long deceased cats lived on Science Diet (regular) kibble bought at the feed store (was considered premium at the time & not available at Supers) all their lives (except at the end) but they supplemented with their own mice, chipmunks, & birds --both were avid hunters.

Actually, I did not care for finding, or worse yet, my dogs finding partially decomposed bodies of unwanted leftovers! But both had great teeth never needing cleaning and rarely needed medical attention (probably just darn lucky!)

Dr Khuly- do you have a cite for canned food fed cats being predisposed to hyperthyroidism? I read somewhere (and can't find it!) that cats fed heavily grain-based diets may be predisposed but I've never heard the canned food thing.

I've seen canned food make a tremendous difference for a lot of fat cats at the clinic where I work.

Katie June 1st, 2009 08:23:43 PM

Katie: Here's a study from 2004 published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Patty Khuly June 1st, 2009 10:27:51 PM

This eing is just my own experience.  I have a cat that 2 years ago could barely walk she was so fat being fed Purina Pro Plan.  At the time I thought I was feeding a premium food.  When the pet food recall started I started looking around for alternatives and settled on frozen raw diets.  It took about 2-3 months for me to transition all 15 cats but it was so worth it.  They all dropped excess weight that the kibble had added.

The really fat cat,her stomach dragged the ground now weighs 7 pounds and looks wonderful.  Her coat is shiny, the colors look deeper and she's so soft all I want to do is just pet her.

Another advantage to feeding raw is reduction in the amount of and the almost non-existant odor of the stools.

Patty P June 2nd, 2009 06:59:50 AM

New research shows that cats should be fed a diet high in protein.  They are not able to metabolize carbohydrates and tun it directly to fat.  Canned diets can provide this for cats without putting them on a diet.  They also need to be stimulated in their environment to get exercise.  You can pick up a great variety of toys at www.petdirectexpress.com

Julie June 2nd, 2009 08:21:19 PM

Late to the party, but here's my trick, similar to sending a food motivated kitty running for her food:  Make kitty jump!  Mine has to make two decent size leaps (floor to counter, counter to fridge top) to get to her food and water.  After eating, she frequently makes a third, smaller jump to the tops of the cabinents to groom and digest.  Going up and down multiple times a day definitely helps her keep her waist.  Plus, my toddler can't play in her bowls.  :-)

If there is something I want to get, I think tiffany is the first, and then, maybe the louis vuitton handbags. If those are my luxury, I want to say some sneaks are not so luxurious. Like jordan shoes, it's really not so freakish for me. And you know, I like playing basketball, and I need a pair of good quality basketball shoes, it must be a good brand. Maybe the nike products is my favorite, so a pair of nike shoes is necessarily.

These shoes are seen on happy, well dressed feet around the globel There is no reason to wear plain, dull shoes that say little about you and your personality - not to mention seeing the same brown and black shoes everywhere you go! You could be wearing unique and custom-designed Hand Painted Art Shoes!
